Clifton Spellman, 61, of West Haven, and Talib Al-Din, 67,  of New Haven, were arrested on Monday, June 3, after the child climbed through a window and ran to police who were responding to a break in the area of 151 Church St., said West Haven Police Sgt. Charles Young.

Upon arrival, an officer was approached by the child who was running from the area and stated she believed someone was trying to break through the front door of her home, said Young.

Officers responded quickly to the girl's home and found Al-Din and Spellman inside. The two attempted to flee from the house but were unsuccessful and apprehended on scene.

Jewelry from the residence was recovered on one of the suspects, and at the scene officers also recovered an “airsoft style gun” as well as numerous other suspected stolen items, Young said.

A vehicle which contained suspected stolen items and believed to be involved in the crime was also recovered from a nearby parking lot.

Spellman and Al-Din were both charged burglary, larceny, criminal mischief, interfering with an officer, and carrying a dangerous weapon.

Police are looking into whether the duo is linked to other break-ins in the area.

Both were processed and held on $250,000 bonds.
